Champion Word of the Week

ASK: make a request

Tip: To be asked is an honor!  It really is, think of all the times someone has asked you to help out or give advice or be with them – you were honored. Give others the same good feeling by asking them to join you.  Be direct; let them know what you want and you’ll usually get it.  And you’ll survive!  This counts even when asking for money but if you involve people in your work they’ll give generously without you asking. Go for it!

SUSTAIN: nourish; maintain.

If your fundraising resembles a spinning wheel and you are hoping to land on the winning number, it’s time to rethink your approach.  The nourishment and growth of your organization should not be a game of chance.  Look for long-term partners to ensure long-term funding.  Turn one-time donations into multiyear pledges.  Explore opportunities for true partnerships with corporations.  Strengthen commitments and turn your gamble into a sure thing.

P.S.  Here’s a great post about the secret to fast growth.  Hint: It’s not diversified funding.

DOOR: movable barrier

A door, unopened, is a barrier.  You want to check all your entry points to make sure that everyone – guests, clients, volunteers, donors – are welcome and know how to get in.  A big part of your role is to continue to build your circle of support but we often forget to check to see how easy it is to join you.  Check your website, your location, your phone system, everyplace that a person may contact you.  Be sure you are always ready to invite people in.

VOICE: expressed opinion

Tip:  You have a voice; use if for your cause.  Storytelling is powerful.  Develop your story – personal and heartfelt – to connect to your audience (and all the world’s your audience).  Post, blog, stand up and share your story in your own, unique voice. Start with a personal experience that inspired you to get involved and your vision for a better world resulting from your work.
